Kiss sweeps into the United Center on Friday on a cloud of hairspray and stage smoke, proving to fans that even in middle-age, its members still know how to rock—and sell some merch. Propelled by the business savvy of Gene Simmons, the make-up masked quartet have had its faces and band logo painted, plastered, screen-printed, engraved, and stenciled onto any number of products of questionable utility over the years, but what's out there for the band's more practical fans? (Not everyone's gonna be ready to drop $250 on a "KISS Creatures box set" tableaux.) The A.V. ONE NIGHT KISS (KISSArmy Brasil)

GENE SIMMONS AXE BASS EXPERIENCE

I have been a huge KISS fan as long as I can remember. Like many of you, Gene Simmons was my hero. I remember teachers asking me in grade school what I wanted to be when I grew up. I never missed a beat in saying "Gene Simmons." He had the coolest costumes and by far, the coolest guitar on the planet. I remember making myself one out of plywood when I was in grade school and carrying it around my fourth grade Halloween costume parade. (see pic) There's nothing like that Axe bass. About a decade ago, a limited run of the Axe bass was sold through Spencer's. I was not lucky enough to get one. I knew a guy who had one. He used to send me pics of it but that was about as close I ever got. I had even resorted to watching buy and sell sites like E-bay in the hopes of finding myself a good second hand copy. Then one day I stumbled across this website on the net www.genesimmonsaxebass.com. Gene was offering a limited number of the guitars to fans on this current U.S. tour. Not only could you get a brand new Axe bass, he would personalize it to you AND he would meet you on the tour and present it to you. I couldn't believe it! This was way beyond buying a guitar...this was a "once in a lifetime event" and "tailored made just for me." So I packed up and headed to Nashville for KISS' concert on Oct. 28th at the Sommet Center (seven hour drive). More

VOODOO FESTER GOT A BIG KISS ON HALLOWEEN NIGHT

Rarely are the members of KISS accused of being great musicians or songwriters. Similarly evergreen arena rockers such as AC/DC and Aerosmith are far better bands, in the strictest sense. Just last week at the New Orleans Arena, AC/DC reiterated this point.

KISS built its legend with different tools, specifically showmanship, savvy and just enough songs that are just good enough. Closing out the big Voodoo Stage on Saturday night – could Voodoo Fest have booked a more appropriate Halloween Night headliner than the original Monsters of Rock? – the current members of KISS played at least as well as could be expected. In guitarist Tommy Thayer and drummer Eric Singer, co-founders Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley have found sidemen who not only wear the make-up well, but are arguably more proficient technically than the guys they replaced.
